Pollination Comparisons

Unlike Honeybees, almost all of their  foraging is done within 200 yards.  That means they pollinate your trees, not the whole countryside.
One Honeybee will visit up to 700 bloom in a day with good weather - but only completely pollinate around 30.  That same day a female Osmia cornifrons would completely pollinate

Female cornifrons & male lignaria

up to 2400 blooms and an Osmia lignaria would pollinate around 1600 blooms What a difference!  The reason for the difference is because the Osmia collect dry pollen in hairs on the underside of their abdomen where it remains viable.  When the bee is foraging it collects the nectar and pollen at the same time by leaning over the side of the bloom to get the nectar and beating its' pollen laden tail up and down on the anthers and pistil.  Honey bees

What better way to get pollination.

Simple to keep!

Inexpensive to raise!

Better pollination!

Better crops!

Practically perfect!

usually collect pollen and nectar separately, so many of the honeybees you see are not actually pollinating.  To make matters worse for pollination, those that are gathering pollen scrape it off their bodies, wet it (making it non-viable) and attach it to their legs - keeping their bodies relatively free of useable pollen (wet pollen won't pollinate).  Bee for bee, Osmia can pollinate over 75 times more fruit. That is why it only takes 200 - 300 nesting female Osmia per acre to get better pollination than a whole hive of honeybees will do.
Now lets compare the cost of pollination.  Honeybee hives can be rented for between $35 and $75 per hive and they are normally used at a rate of 1 per acre of trees (intense plantings sometimes use more).  After you have a starter purchase of bees the replacement EZ-BEE Nesters are costing less than $36.00 and are reused for 3 - 4 years - that is less than $12.00 a year!  And your getting the best orchard pollination you can get!  Even if you get your EZ-BEE Nesters with a starter bunch of bees you will still be saving money over the cost of renting in just the third year or forth year!  WOW!
Research indicates that when you use Osmia for apple orchard pollination you get larger and better shaped apples too!  It's true!  Osmia pollinate the bloom so well that the king bloom is more likely to be fully pollinated - thus your apple doesn't form lopsided and if the king bloom is fully pollinated the apples surrounding it fall off  naturally - sending more growth into the "King Apple".  This good pollination can save you a lot on the cost of chemical thinning too!
